Grass blocks turn to dirt when you mine them, unless you use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch . Using Silk Touch you can collect grass blocks from the surface and plant them underground or in the Nether.

Tall Grass and Ferns

Tall Grass Fern

Tall grass can be found in many biomes. In certain biomes you will get ferns instead of grass.

You can use shears to collect tall grass and ferns to plant elsewhere, otherwise breaking tall grass blocks will destroy them

When breaking grass, you may recover seeds that can be planted to grow wheat.

Vines grow in Jungle and Swamp biomes. You can climb them like a ladder.

It's possible to harvest vines using Shears and place them on a vertical surface where they will grow into a natural ladder.

Cacti grow in the Desert. They cause damage to players or mobs who bump into them, and destroy items that come into contact with them.

Lily Pads
